Tips for engaging with your Muslim friends - Tip #2 - Put your faith on display
We recommend that you start slowly by simply letting them know you have a faith. Depending on your background they might assume you don’t unless you show you do. Have a look at Deuteronomy 6:4-9 where God instructed the Israelites to put their faith on display, both as a reminder to their own people and to show the world their devotion to God.
Here are six suggestions of how you might demonstrate your faith to a Muslim neighbour, friend, or work colleague:
Ask if they pray. Tell them about something you prayed for today.
Tell them something you’re thankful to God for, or learned about God from your latest Bible reading.
Ask them what their name means (this is often important in Muslim cultures). See if you can link the meaning to something in the Bible.
Try asking the miracle question: “If God would do a miracle in your life, what would you ask for?” We’ve found this very helpful in conversations with strangers.
If they’re sharing about a struggle in their life, offer to pray with them or share a verse that’s helped you.
As in the Deuteronomy passage, wear something that demonstrates your faith: a wristband, clothing, or jewellery with a verse or symbol on it.
These are suggestions to create intrigue and maybe lead to a deeper conversation.
