Ingredients
2 ½ cups chickpeas or fava beans, canned or soaked overnight
1 large onion, chopped
4 tsp fresh dill, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tsp baking powder
1 ½ tbsp plain flour
1 tsp black pepper
2 tsp salt
Oil for deep or shallow frying
Method
Put the chickpeas or beans, onion, dill and garlic in a food processor and blend to make a coarse paste.
Stir in the flour, baking powder, salt and pepper. Add water if necessary so that the mixture holds together.
Form the mixture into palm-sized patties. You can add more flour or water to create the right consistency.
Heat the oil in a frying pan.
Fry the patties on a medium-high heat, flipping them halfway through, until golden brown and crisp on the outside.
Serve with flatbread and a yoghurt or tahini dips.
Inspire
Prepare the Tamiya recipe, along with any other dishes you’d like to include. Flatbreads and a yoghurt sauce would work well.
Instead of the traditional way of sitting on the floor, spread out a plain paper tablecloth on the table and have some pencils and crayons handy for people to use.
Start the meal by having someone read the Country Profile and Prayer page for Sudan. Invite everyone to think of their own prayer points, images or biblical truths for Sudan.
Tuck into the food. Whilst you’re eating use the tablecloth to write, draw and colour your prayers for Sudan.
When the meal is over invite everyone to get up to see what other people have drawn and written. Use the time to pray together, or simply commit your collective artwork to God.
